Stationary Batch Asphalt Plant VS Continuous Asphalt Mixing Plant

Jul 08, 2025

In road construction projects, asphalt mixing plants are key equipment for providing asphalt mixtures. Among them, the stationary batch asphalt plant and continuous asphalt plants are two common types. They are significantly different in working methods, equipment structure, production quality, and applicable scenarios, and each has its own unique advantages.

Working method

The stationary asphalt plant adopts a batch mixing production process. The specific process is as follows: the cold material is discharged from the cold material hopper according to the set mix ratio, and the initial mix ratio is controlled by the speed of the motor. After that, it enters the drying and heating stage to dry the aggregate and reach the appropriate temperature.

Then, the hot material is sent to the vibrating screen for screening and stored in the hot material bin according to different particle sizes. Subsequently, the hot materials of various specifications enter the mixing tank together with the accurately measured mineral powder and asphalt. After 45-60 seconds of mixing, the asphalt mixture is formed, and then falls into the finished product bin or waste bin to complete a production batch.

The continuous asphalt plant adopts a continuous production method, and the heating and drying of aggregates and the mixing of mixed materials are completed in the same drum. In the drum, the aggregate is heated and dried while being mixed with asphalt, mineral powder, etc. that are continuously injected at a set flow rate. The finished material is continuously output from the other end of the drum to achieve continuous production.

Equipment structure

To achieve accurate batch production, the asphalt batching plant contains multiple complex functional modules. There is a hot material hoist in the mixing plant, which is used to transport the heated aggregate vertically to a high place for screening; the multi-layer hot material silo is used to temporarily store hot materials of different particle sizes to meet different proportion requirements; there are also aggregate scales, mineral powder scales, asphalt scales and other metering equipment to ensure the accuracy of raw material addition.

The continuous asphalt plant eliminates the secondary screening and hot material silo storage links, and the equipment structure is relatively simple. It is mainly composed of a cold material supply system, a drying and mixing integrated drum, and a finished material conveyor belt.

Because it does not require a towering mixing building and numerous lifting and screening equipment, it is of compact layout, small floor space and simple installation, commissioning and maintenance, which can reduce construction and operation costs.

Production quality

In the stationary asphalt batching plant, each raw material is individually and accurately weighed to ensure accurate mix ratios. The powerful stirring device in the mixing tank allows the raw materials to be fully mixed, and the produced asphalt mixture has high stability in key indicators such as grading and oil-to-stone ratio, which is suitable for projects with high requirements for road quality, such as airport runways and highways. When dealing with special materials such as porous asphalt and split emulsions, the mixing quality can be optimized by adjusting the mixing time to meet high standards.

The continuous asphalt plant uses dynamic proportioning technology to monitor and adjust the input flow of raw materials in real time to maintain the stability of the production process. Although its metering method is mostly overall volumetric measurement, which is slightly less accurate than intermittent weight measurement, the continuous production mode can reduce the quality fluctuations that may be caused by batch switching, and is suitable for projects such as ordinary roads that have certain quality standards and require a large amount of asphalt mixtures. As long as the quality of the raw materials is stable, products of uniform quality can be continuously produced.

Applicable scenarios

For situations where the quality requirements for asphalt mixtures are high, the construction period is long, and the projects are concentrated, batch type asphalt plants are more suitable. For example, when building high-grade highways, due to complex traffic conditions and high load-bearing requirements, the durability and flatness of the road surface are strictly required. Intermittent asphalt plants can provide guarantees for the project with their precise proportions and good mixing quality. At the same time, it has greater flexibility in changing the formula, and can adjust the mixture proportion according to the needs of different stages of the project to meet diversified construction requirements.

In large-scale linear projects, such as the paving of highway trunk roads, continuous asphalt plants have obvious advantages. Its continuous production characteristics can be combined with construction equipment such as pavers and rollers to form an efficient construction line, improve construction efficiency, and shorten the project cycle. In projects such as municipal roads that require high construction speeds and require a large amount of asphalt mixtures, it can also provide a stable supply of products that meet the standards.
